I hate all of it - the raw soreness in my throat, not being able to breathe through my nose, the general lethargy and the constant coughing. It can go away and never darken my door again.

I also hate the guilt. I don't know why, but I always feel guilty when I take a sick day off of work. Now more than ever, because we have our larger building and need more people to cover both floors. I took today off because I started coming down with a cold on Sunday and it had hit me full-force by Monday. It's not almost Wednesday and nothing's changed, except the coughing is becoming more frequent. And I'm worried/feeling guilty about taking another day off.

I know, better safe than sorry especially with all the concern nowadays with swine flu and H1N1. And it's not like I can't afford it; I have a bunch of sick leave built up. But I still can't help feeling guilty about taking one sick day, let alone two in a row. I feel like I'm letting my coworkers down or leaving them in the lurch or something.

Ghosts, Spooks and Other Halloweenies

I'll come right out and admit it - I am an absolute Halloween freak. I start listening to spooky Halloween music, I visit the Halloween stores that start popping up in vacant storefronts all around Rockford, I watch all the Travel Channel shows about haunted locations and scary attractions, I start reading more about ghosts and hauntings and things like that... Seriously, if I had my way there'd be Halloween decorations inside and outside the house starting the first of October rather than the week before.

I don't know what it is about the season that makes me this way. I've always had an interest in the paranormal (one of my dreams in life is to one day have a paranormal encounter at a haunted location), but October is usually the time that it kicks into high gear. And I've got some really good memories of Halloween from my childhood, notably the Halloween carnivals at the middle school or the Halloween parade from when I was in grade school. Maybe that's why I'm slightly excited about the chance to dress up at work on October 31.

Now, whether or not I actually will is another thing...

Rebuild vs Remodel (or the Hatfields and the McCoys)

And it's controversy time in Byron again. I guess we can't go one or two years without some sort of debate dividing the population now, can we? I'm just glad the library isn't at the epicenter of it this time.

So the big issue now is whether or not it's really necessary to tear down the 2 - 5 wing of the Mary Morgan Elementary School and build a new one. So far there have been letters to the Ogle County Life in support of the new building and a "newsletter" (hand delivered in the dead of night; what does that tell you?) supporting the other side.

I have to say after five years working as a substitute aide in Byron I have to agree with a lot of their points. None of the restrooms in that section of the school are handicapped-friendly, save for maybe one staff/guest restroom near the conference room. At the moment there's only one student at Mary Morgan that I know of who is confined to a wheelchair. Now he's in the Pre K - 1 wing, but what about down the line when he's older and switches classrooms?

The "newsletter" claimed that contractors had been through the school in 2007 and saw nothing that constituted an "emergency". Well, I'm sorry but small electrical fires in the ceiling while school is in session? In a building that has no sprinkler system but seems to have more missing ceiling tiles and buckets on the floor to catch leaks every time I work there? That doesn't constitute an emergency? And I've lost count of how many kids I've seen in that building with coughs and other bronchial problems. Hell, it seems like after every time I worked at Mary Morgan I got sick and it was always with a horrible cough. Coincidence?

And really when it comes down to rebuilding vs remodeling the current building, which is more feasible? With all the electrical, plumbing and room layout problems not to mention the fact that it's at least forty years old so is probably filled with asbestos, the entire building would more than likely have to be gutted and then everything would have to be rebuilt to fit the existing framework. Lord knows how long that would take, certainly longer than the three months we have off for summer vacation. If it did go longer where do these people against a new building proposing that the displaced students have their classes? Try and squeeze them into the same wing as the preschoolers, kindergartners and first graders? Try and squeeze them somewhere into the high school or the new middle school? Or bus them over to the old middle school and try to fit four grades into a building that could barely fit three?

I guess the bottom line here is people need to stop worrying about how much money the school board is spending and focus on what's really important: the safety of their kids. According to the State of Illinois, Mary Morgan is in violation of SEVERAL school health and safety codes. Not one, not just a couple, several. If the school district continues to be in violation of those issues then Byron loses its state funding. Which means there won't be any money for the people of Byron to fight over/complain about how it's being spent or not being spent.

If that happens, I hope these people can live with themselves.

Labor Day Weekend Blog Kick-Off

Okay, so is it weird that I'm sitting here at home on my day off wishing I was at work? Even though I know all the kids swarmed in that direction after school because they didn't have anything better to do on a half-day? Seriously, is it?

Maybe this is a sign that I'm supposed to get off my butt, go back to school and get my MLS. I love working at the library, and no recently moving into the new building isn't the only reason. I'm not sure what I'd do with a degree in library science, though. Right now my only long-term goal is to keep my job and get more hours if I'm able. I'm not looking for a new job at another library. I'm comfortable with where I'm at.

Well, I'd better savor my day off while I can along with the last 9 - 2 Saturday I'll be working in a while. After Monday it'll be back to 9 - 5 Saturdays again. At least Ms. M. and I won't be the only two people working in the building anymore.
